Work Hours and Call Schedule:
While on Psychiatry residents can expect to work an average of 45 – 50 hr/week, Mon – Fri.
PGY 1 residents rotating on Medicine, Pediatrics, or Family Medicine can expect to work an average of 10 – 12 hr/day, six days per week. Emergency Medicine rotations are on 8 – 12 hr shifts, an average of 18 shifts per 4 week block. Neurology rotations average between the psychiatry hours and Med/Peds hours. All rotations follow ACGME Duty Hour requirements.
There is no overnight call for PGY 1 residents rotating off-service and there is no night float for psychiatry residents rotating off-service.
PGY 1 residents (on Psychiatry) from Jan – June and PGY 2 residents from July – Jan have a short-call experience from 5 – 10 PM providing psychiatry consultations at Greenville Memorial Hospital to general medical patients and the Emergency Department. This experience has indirect supervision with direct supervision immediately available (faculty supervisor is on-site).
PGY 2 residents from Jan – June and PGY 3 residents from July – Dec have “Call from Home” from 5 PM – 8 AM the next day providing psychiatry telephone call to the inpatient services at Marshall I Pickens Hospital. This experience has indirect supervision with direct supervision available (faculty supervision available by phone and on-site when needed or requested).
PGY 3 residents from Jan – June and PGY 4 residents do not currently have a call requirement.
