A Typical Day
6:30am/7:00am to 8:30am: Pre-Rounding & Team Huddle
8:30am to 12:30pm: Inpatient work rounds and teaching rounds, followed by patient care
12:30pm to 1:30pm: Lunch and noon conference (protected time)
1:30 to 8:00pm*: Inpatient care, admitting, discharging, teaching
*Many residents leave around 5pm upon checkout if they are not assigned as the admitting intern or upper level resident. Some residents will leave following noon conference for their primary continuity clinic.
8:00pm: Sign out to on-call team
The overnight team consists of 2 upper level residents (PGY-2 or PGY-3) and one intern. An additional PGY-3 stays overnight for PICU coverage and is available for further support as needed. An additional PGY-1 resident serves in the ‘short call’ role from 5p-10p, fielding phone calls from outpatients after hours and to support the on-call team as necessary.
Both interns and upper level schedules involve 7 overnight calls during each inpatient ward month.
