What Sets Us Apart?
We offer great training in in-patient medicine and ambulatory training. Additionally, we have an exciting array of unique opportunities to help you reach your goal of becoming a great internist. Some of these opportunities are unique to our hospital system, and set us apart from other internal medicine training sites. These include:
Simulation Center Procedure Training
At the beginning of their PGY 1 year, our residents participate in six weeks of a weekly two hour simultation training course. Using sophisticated mannequins, this experience is designed to give interns training in procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, and chest tube placement before performing these procedures on actual patients. Residents are mentored by faculty who have daily experience in performing these procedures. Click here to learn more about the Greenville HealthCare Simulation Center.
PGY 2 Teaching Retreat
Each May, our rising PGY 2 residents participate in a teaching retreat at the beautiful Red Horse Inn in Landrum, South Carolina. Taught by our Program Director and other experienced faculty, this course is designed to prepare our rising PGY 2 residents to supervise a ward team, interact with nursing and case management staff, and to teach interns and medical students.
Our new PGY 2 residents comment that this course greatly helps them feel more at ease as they begin their new roles as upper level residents. www.theredhorseinn.com
Business of Medicine Training
Our residents participate in a monthly “Business of Medicine” course. This course is given throughout the three years of training. It offers education in coding, billing, malpractice avoidance and malpractice insurance. Additionally, the course offers “hands on” practice experience and advice from internists, specialists and attorneys in our region.
Each Spring, a one day “Business of Medicine” seminar culminates the PGY 3 business training. This seminar is given by physicians, attorneys and other business leaders to help prepare our residents for a successful medical career.
All of our residents are also trained in the use of an electronic medical record (EMR) as part their patient care training. EMR’s are rapidly being adopted by hospital systems throughout the United States, and by many medical practices. Learning how to use an EMR during your training here will greatly enhance and simplify your work experience after graduation.
Strong training in the new field of Hospitalist Medicine
We have a very active Hospitalist medicine section at GHS. Dr. Kevin Gilroy is the lead Hospitalist at the Greenville Health System and an enthusiastic educator. Our medicine ward teams are staffed by our faculty Hospitalists, who enjoy teaching the skills necessary to become competent in Hospitalist medicine. As a result, Hospitalist medicine is a popular career choice for our residents.
All of our incoming interns are assigned a faculty mentor at the beginning of their training. This faculty member meets with them periodically throughout their training to offer support, counseling and career advice.
Vascular Medicine Fellowship
We have one of the few vascular medicine fellowship training opportunities in the United States located here at GHS. Vascular fellows spend one or two years learning both medical therapy and procedures necessary to treat patients with vascular disease. The program is staffed by two internal medicine-trained vascular medicine specialists. Our Director, Bruce Gray, M.D., is one of the founders of the Board of Vascular Medicine. The first two vascular fellows were graduates of the GHS internal medicine residency program.
These are just some of the unique benefits of training with us at the Greenville Health System. Please browse our website and feel free to contact us if you have further questions, or if you would like to visit or apply for training here.
