Thank you for your interest in Greenville Family Medicine Residency Program. We are excited that you are taking the time to look into our program. Our program is full of innovation, unique opportunities, and supportive faculty. It also happens to be located in a great place to live if you enjoy outdoor activities and friendly people.
Our main priority at GHS is our patients! Family medicine is one of the most versatile programs in that we get to see everyone from a 1 day old in the newborn nursery to a 102 year old in the nursing home or office (and of course, everyone in between). Our program is collaborative with all the other specialties in the hospital, which makes it possible to see the broad spectrum of patients we see. And at GHS you will see a lot! Greenville Health System is the health care center for most of the upstate and covers areas into Georgia and North Carolina. Because of this, patients with complex pathologies and ailments travel many miles to be treated by our physicians. Residents are able to work one on one with the specialist of each field to have the best training in each specialty possible. By the end of residency at GHS, our residents feel confident in their medical knowledge and decision making skills. Furthermore, throughout residency, we maintain continuity with our own patients in the family medicine office even while rotating with the other specialties.
There are an abundance of opportunities within our program. First of all, we are affiliated with University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville so we get to be involved in shaping the future leaders of medicine. Medicine is always changing. Getting to interact with and teach students helps us keep up to date on the newest studies, guidelines and treatments. Our program is also very strong in Sports Medicine. Steadman Hawkins is one of the leading Sports Medicine programs and we get to rotate with them multiple times during residency. We also have multiple Sports Medicine Faculty members that we get to work with regularly in our clinic, which helps us to better assess and diagnose musculoskeletal problems. Another great thing about our program is its commitment to research. Throughout our education, we have the chance to participate in research studies and truly feel that they belong at the forefront of medicine. And finally, we have a diverse faculty who are very supportive and eager to help residents reach their goals.
Residency life can be stressful at times and we recognize that resident wellness is vital to providing compassionate, high quality patient care. On their days off, residents can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, water activities such as canoeing, kayaking paddle boarding or boating on Lake Keowee or Lake Hartwell. Going to the gym is also really convenient with the Life Center located across the street from the Center for Family Medicine office. The Life Center is a state of the art fitness facility with swimming pool, sauna, running track, fitness classes and more. It is available to residents at a very discounted price. Residents, single or married, can also enjoy Greenville’s active night life and amazing dining opportunities. Spouses also have job opportunities with large businesses in the area including BMW, General Electric and Michelin.
